Benchwarmer

Cameron Morelli, twenty-two years old, captain of the Northridge University hockey team, campus golden boy, and top prospect in the NHL draft. He was flawless in front of everyone—tall, handsome, with an impressive record. But no one knew that the roaring sound of every hockey game was suppressing a secret deep within him: he had known he was gay since the age of seventeen, yet he locked his true self beneath the ice, maintaining a "perfect relationship" with cheerleader Lila. Mason Gray, twenty years old, a transfer student who joined the team on a scholarship. Lean, stubborn, and exceptionally talented, he carries a hidden past—he was once Cameron's roommate at the youth hockey training camp. That summer, fifteen-year-old Mason witnessed seventeen-year-old Cameron secretly deleting a boy's number from his phone in the locker room, then pretending nothing had happened. Mason never forgot those evasive eyes. Now, reunited, he resolves to let no one evade him again. In a training accident, Mason was punished for "disobeying the team captain's orders" and assigned as Cameron's personal training assistant. Forced contact ignited the long-suppressed chemistry between them—every collision on the ice sparked friction, and every glance concealed simmering tension. From hostility to ambiguity, from the first accidental kiss to an irreversible deepening of their connection, they secretly fell in love amidst skates and sweat. However, the pressure of a secret romance, teammates' suspicions, the NHL scout scrutiny from Cameron's father, and Lyla's jealousy gradually tightened the noose. When a leaked video nearly exposed everything, Cameron made the most heartbreaking choice between fear and love—he chose silence, the team, and pretense. Mason left heartbroken. After the breakup, Cameron's competitive performance plummeted. He finally realized that the ice without Mason was merely a cold mirror, reflecting the version of himself he dared not face. In the final match of the season championship, Cameron made a choice that caught everyone off guard—he removed the mask of his "perfect life" under the spotlight of thousands.
